Whenever you travel somewhere away from your home, it’s only natural to wonder what you can and can’t bring with you. Laws are different in every state, so you need to be careful whenever you’re crossing borders with questionable items. One such type of item is fireworks; or sparklers in particular, which many people wonder if they’re safe to transport. The reasons that you’d want to travel with sparklers are numerous, but let’s cut to brass tacks and discuss what’s allowed and what isn’t.

In a Car

If you are transporting sparklers in your car, then chances are you’ll be just fine as far as the law is concerned. There are only a handful of states that don’t allow sparklers, and mostly they just ban the sale and use; not the possession. Unless you have an unusually large quantity of sparklers or are using them in a blatantly unlawful manner, you shouldn’t have anything to worry about. However, like with all things in life, it’s better to check the laws in whatever states you’re traveling to just to be on the safe side.

On a Plane

Taking sparklers on an airplane is a big no-no; even if you pack them in your checked baggage. According to FAA rules, sparklers and other combustible items cannot be transported by air due to the risks involved. When sparklers are sent over from China to the United States for retailer to sell around the 4th of July, they must come via ship across the Pacific Ocean. There are no exceptions to this rule, so if you if you’re planning to fly then you should find a source for sparklers locally at your destination.

Alternatives

If you are traveling somewhere by airplane and really need sparklers, there are a few alternatives you could try. For instance, if you need wedding sparklers for your destination wedding in Belize, you can just buy them at a shop when you arrive. If you happen to be going to a country where getting wedding sparklers is next to impossible, you could ship them ahead of time via ship so they’re waiting for you at your hotel when you arrive. Just make sure you do it a few weeks in advance because it can take quite some time to arrive when being shipped by sea.

Before you take sparklers with you on your trip, it’s always best to investigate the laws regarding your situation. The last thing you want is a run-in with the law during your trip, so always lean towards caution. But if you know the laws and follow all the rules, you can take sparklers with you when you travel to most locations legally.
